Swine Flu: Free Access To World-renowned Public Health Database

CABI has announced free access to its specialist Global Health database, the definitive database for public health information, to assist in the battle against swine flu – http://www.cabdirect.org/globalhealth.

Simultaneously CABI has developed a 'swine flu dashboard' that brings together up-to-the-minute information on the virus (http://www.netvibes.com/cabialerts). The 'dashboard' includes resources from CABI and critical advice from key health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

In a fast changing sequence of events that has led to the rapid escalation of concern from WHO, and the reaction of national governments in considering their response to a possible influenza pandemic, release of the database is designed to give urgently needed support to those who need it most: scientists, medical professionals and health authorities investigating the causes and treatments of the disease and linkages to past outbreaks.

Influenza researchers urgently need to be able to refer back to previous scientific work in this area to understand the behaviour of previous strains of the virus and to research effective mechanisms for handling earlier outbreaks.

The Global Health database brings together global knowledge on every aspect of influenza since 1910. The knowledge it contains could provide a key weapon in health researchers' response in understanding and controlling the virus.

Much of the data in Global Health is derived from publications that have long since vanished. They tell us a great deal about past pandemics, from rates and patterns of transmission, duration, timing of epidemiological peaks, geographical distribution of the disease, government preparedness and quarantine provisions through to effects on different age and social groups, severity in developing versus developed countries, symptoms, causes of mortality (secondary problems, especially pneumonia, were devastating in the Spanish flu) and mortality rates.

When you open Global Health database, you will find that this database is open to the public and on the top of the page there says Database last updated: Jun 17, 2009. A new version of CAB Direct is coming in June 2009 please take a look www.cabdirect2.org. You can enter search words or phrase in the search blank to find related information. For example, if you put in ‘swine flu’ and you can get 175 records. Most of them are got for you with full text with the downloading link in the new window after you click the title of one result. The second result is ‘2. Swine influenza: frequently asked questions. World Health Organization/Weekly Epidemiological Record, 2009, Vol. 84, No. 18, pp. 149-151’. Promoting Posture

——Research outlines design features more appropriate for seating and desks in education environments.

Furniture and furnishings are important components of the learning environment. Selecting seating and desks that promote good posture not only has ergonomic benefits, but also results in a more attentive and comfortable student.

A research report looked at design features more appropriate for education environments, exploring such areas as:

*The size of children and changes in their dimensions that affect school furniture sizes.

*Furniture size that prevents harmful effects on children.

*Features of school desks and chairs that can benefit children’s physical and intellectual development.

*Principles of posture and sizing, and their influence on school furniture design.

The report stated that in many education institutions, cost criteria often necessitate a conventional-height chair without armrests. Lack of armrests also allows better freedom of entry and exit, and close positioning of the chair under the desk, which can provide arm support.

The following features are recommended to provide conditions most conductive to proper sitting:

*For the resting, relaxed position:

-A backrest with about a 15-degree inclination from the vertical position and convexly curved in the lumbar area; this encourages proper posture, and gives support for trunk load. The top of the backrest should be well-rounded.

-The ability to reduce pressure when in a forward slouch position.

-Space beneath the backrest allowing buttocks free clearance and permitting optimum use of the lumbar backrest.

-The ability of the rear part of the seat to incline rearwards at about 5 degrees to help prevent forward slide and giving an included trunk- thigh angle of about 100 degrees.

-Seat height and length set to avoid pressure under the thighs and adjoining areas with feet flat on the floor.

*For the forward writing/drawing position:

-The front of the seat should have a downward slope of 10 degrees to 30 degrees with a well-rounded edge to aid the downward angling of thighs when legs are tucked under the chair.

-The seat should be set slightly high within the acceptable tolerance range of the user to suit the angled thigh.

*Transversely:

-The backrest should have a concave radius slightly flatter than the user’s back.

-The seat should be almost flat to allow various positions without pressure at the edges, and be wide enough to easily support the rear and surrounding buttocks.

*The desk:

-High enough to give knee and horizontal thigh freedom, and allow free sideway swing for easy entry/exit.

-Provide a surface incline of at least 10 degrees, encouraging more upright trunk and head positions.

Do What You Want To Do And Believe Yourself!

Yesterday I saw a related blog on Sina space to the Air France accident on June 1st. I also saw some other entries on the blog and felt something the same with the author who is a Huawei staff. In one entry named “[原创] 我毕业后的日子”, I agree with what he said and wanted to say something here.

The author Jimmy was a civil service for only 3 months after he graduated in 2004. Why he resigned for such a stable work in so many people’ eyes? From the view of the author, he listed 3 reasons. Firstly, it was a boring working atmosphere and he might be absolutely obedient to the direct supervisor, which were not what he wanted to do about his own work. Secondly, he would be able to see what he would be five years later and of course, could buy a house with a very good price, but was the city the place he would live in for life? Thirdly, that city was a northern city far away from his hometown and it seemed that it would not be the place he would like to stay in for long time. But many families want their family members work in civil service system.

The author said something somewhat like what I encountered, especially one reason I resonate. Before I came here to continue to study, I also resigned from a relatively stable work as a university teacher. When I came there after I graduated, I had the same feeling with the author. I would be able to see what I would be five years later after I got to know the real situation there. I could not see the future and that condition was not what I wanted to be in. Was that state what represented my whole life state? No. I got in deep thought. I asked myself what would I want to do and like to do. I should face with what I really think and believe myself. So I made the final decision to realize the future what I dreamed of.

In the end the author expressed some common topics. I would like to write here to adhere to the points of view.

1、工作的选择是自己的事情,表面上别人认为好的工作不一定适合自己;

1. The choice of the work is your own affair and the work which others think well on the surface might not be suitable for you.

2、在中国目前的环境里,永远不能停止奋斗,如果你希望生活品质更高一些的话;

2. In China's current environment, you will never stop to fight, if you want a higher quality of life.

3、选择是要自己做的,一旦决定了,就要承担所有的风险,而且选择了通常是无法回头的;

3. It is for oneself to make his choice once the decision is made. It is necessary to bear all the risks and it can not return after he chooses.

4、选择工作更要注重发展机会,而非只是它比别的公司多几百块钱;

4. Developing opportunities should be paid more attention when selecting a job, not just more than a few hundred dollars than other companies.

5、要理性的消费,然后进行适合于自己风险承受能力的投资;

5. A rational consumption and then proceed to appropriate investment within the risk tolerance.

6、工作头几年,要更注重开源而非仅是节流,对于打工族,就是努力提高自己的收入。

6. In the first few years of the work, it is necessary to pay more attention to open source, not just cutting expense and for working people, they should strive to improve their income.

(我有同学就是想自己当老板的,放弃上万的月薪创业,另当别论。)

 (Some of my classmates who would like to be their own boss gave up a monthly salary of tens of thousands and ventured by themselves. It is a different matter.)

(Thanks to the author and I would like to be his friend and continue to concern with his blog: 多味年华的BLOG.)

New Lower Back Pain Study Findings Have Been Reported By Scientists At Northwestern University

(From Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, May 9, 2009 p1387)

According to recent research from the United States, "Compared to standing posture, sitting decreases lumbar lordosis, increases low back muscle activity, disc pressure, and pressure on the ischium, which are associated with occupational LBP. A sitting device that reduces spinal load and low back muscle activities may help increase sitting comfort and reduce LBP risk."

"The objective of this study is to investigate the biomechanical effect of sitting with a reduced ischial support and an enhanced lumbar support (Off-Loading) on load, interface pressure and muscle activities. A laboratory test in low back pain (LBP) and asymptomatic subjects was designed to test the biomechanical effect of using the Off-Loading sitting posture. The load and interface pressure on seat and the backrest, and back muscle activities associated with usual and this Off-Loading posture were recorded and compared between the two postures. Compared with Normal (sitting upright with full support of the seat and flat backrest) posture, sitting in Off-Loading posture significantly shifted the center of the force and the peak pressure on the seat anteriorly towards the thighs. It also significantly decreased the contact area on the seat and increased that on the backrest. It decreased the lumbar muscle activities significantly. These effects are similar in individuals with and without LBP," wrote M. Makhsous and colleagues, Northwestern University (see also Lower Back Pain).

The researchers concluded: "Sitting with reduced ischial support and enhanced lumbar support resulted in reduced sitting load on the lumbar spine and reduced the lumbar muscular activity, which may potentially reduce sitting-related LBP."

Makhsous and colleagues published their study in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders (Biomechanical effects of sitting with adjustable ischial and lumbar support on occupational low back pain: evaluation of sitting load and back muscle activity. BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2009, 10(1):17).
